idiot seeks help

I spoke with an agent yesterday who loved my samples and wants all my completed work, as well as my source list, an outline for the completed project, and, the worst thing ever, a bio.

It's been suggested that since I am in horrible pain trying to write about myself, I should ask the advice of my friends. I've gotten a few good ideas so far.

If you know and love me (or HATES me), please tell me, just who the fuck am i? What are my accomplishments?

Help heal my pain so I can write this bio and send the package off to the nice agent lady and get an inch closer to my dream of publishing a book.

No, no, don't be distressed. The bio is always tricky; would a look at some others help? If so, I'd suggest going over to Readerville and clicking on a few of the Author pages. Last I looked, they're public (it's a register and pay site), but the author pages are open to all.

Skip the "I was given the Best New Book About Masturbation in 1953!" crap; I left education and honours and shit off mine, because it not only aint anyone's damned business, I could care less when I read it about other writers.

And for accomplishments, lean everything toward the book you're trying to place. "AB has organised events from everything from [insert] to [insert], and for everyone from [insert] to [insert]." It's a book about fandom and how fandom has given people a new family - lean it that way.

My bios are always lame and overly wordy.

But I would put something in there about how part of your perspective in writing this book was developed by living it directly, mentioning your immersion in fandom from many perspectives...

I'll stop there, because already I've used "perspective" twice.

Gah.

First, congrats! Second I agree with DWV, people reading this bio should get a sense that you are like them. "Look, she goes to cons and posts on the internet. Wow she went even further and planned events and spearheaded campaigns, she's like a superfan. I can relate." I find the bio blurbs to be bland and sterile. I recently did one and it was more of a short story. I'd start it with the very first moment you crossed the line from average fan to something more, than the events that followed and what motivated them ending with the culmination of writing the book. Ex. "Something happened after someone replied to my post, I posted again and again. I got home from work, logged on and continued posting until early into the morning. I woke up and the first thing I did was check the message board. I was a junkie looking for my next fix. Little did I know it wouldn't end there. My obsession would grow and evolve, not only would I become one of those "vampire people," I'd become one of their leaders." Again, you're the person people must relate to I do the bio as "Alice in Bronzerland."

Go with the basics. Firefly, W&H, Destination LA, not going insane and winding up in a little padded room as a result of any or all of the above. Fury's site.

And then listen to Deb, because I'm talking out of my ass.

Exactly what Debg said.

When I was having to do evaluations of myself (in order to get bonuses, etc) I started by writing a lavish praising of myself from a bosses point of view. Then I rewrote it, leaving out one or two superlatives. Remember, a fan wants to know if you know so and so. When you mention the events you have put on, mention what stars were there. Always impresses people that -you- were able to pull them in. Never mind if it was actually K, or whoever. Grab the glory for the book.

Much food for thought. Thanks!
